Recognition

Denise L. Smith, professor of Health and Exercise Sciences has received the Dr. John Granito Award for Excellence in Fire Service Leadership and Management Research (the Dr. Granito Award).  Professor Smith will give the Keynote Address at the 2015 Fire Leadership and Management Symposium, scheduled July 8-10 in Tulsa, OK. Her talk will focus on 鈥渦nderstanding and preventing sudden cardiac events in the fire service鈥� based on the research conducted over the past 20 years.

Activities

Janet G. Casey, professor of English and director of the First-Year Experience, has been accepted to a National Endowment for the Humanities Institute titled 鈥淐ity of Print:  New York and the Periodical Press,鈥� scheduled June 14-26 at the New York City College of Technology (CUNY).

Institute discussions will be led by cultural historians, archivists, and experts in the fields of American literature, art and urban history, and periodical studies; hands-on sessions will take place in the periodicals collection of the New-York Historical Society; site visits are planned to such locations as Newspaper Row, Gramercy Park, the Cond茅 Nast archives, and the Algonquin Hotel; and Digital Humanities workshops are scheduled. Participants will consider new interdisciplinary approaches for researching and teaching periodicals that take into account the important site of their production, as well as relevant cultural, technological, aesthetic, and historical considerations.

Lawrence Ian Reed, visiting assistant professor in psychology, will be a speaker at TEDx Pittsburgh titled 鈥淭aking Pittsburgh to the Next Level,鈥� scheduled May 23. Reed is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.

Mary Stange, professor of women鈥檚 studies and religion and director of the religion program, attended, as an expert member of the U.S. Delegation, the 62^nd General Assembly of the Council on Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) in Pravets, Bulgaria, April 23-25. The conference was titled 鈥淗ealthy Wildlife, Healthy People: World Forum on Sustainable Hunting.鈥�  She did a presentation in the Artemis Working Group on 鈥淥utdoor Ethics and Education for the 21^st Century.鈥� As vice president of Artemis, she also worked while there with the planning committee for the third international conference on women鈥檚 hunting and sustainability, to be held in the Netherlands in July 2016.

Publications

Denise L. Smith, professor of health and exercise sciences, and colleagues from the University of California, Los Angeles published a paper titled 鈥淰alidation of the firefighter WFI treadmill protocol for predicting VO₂max鈥� in Occupational Medicine, Vol. 65, No. 2, 2015. The study was funded by a contract with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (as part of the UCLA Physiological Health Assessment System for Emergency Responders program). Smith also published 鈥淐ardiovascular strain associated with high-rise firefighting鈥� in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, Vol. 12, No. 4, 2015. She collaborated with colleagues from the International Association of Fire Fighters on the study, which was funded through the DHS/FEMA.
